There are several different reasons people choose to cycle as a mode of transportation. There are many different reasons to cycle, and some have nothing to do with being a preferred method of getting to point A to point B. Engaging in exercise is one of the overwhelming reasons that a large number of individuals choose to go cycling. Some people are competitors in cycling. Still others ride bicycles as a hobby because they enjoy the feeling of riding a bicycle around their neighborhood. Regardless of your reason for needing to find a bicycle, you need to take some things into consideration when the time comes to choose the perfect bicycle for you. Consider how the bicycle brakes, for one. Brakes are very important on a bike, you need to understand how they work and what type you will most likely need for your bike. City riding is done with thin tires, designed to work perfectly with the smooth concrete roads and sidewalks you find in a city. For a mountain bike take away 12 inches from your inseam. Mountain bikes have different tires than a road bike. Mountain bike tires are thicker than road bike tires, designed for rocky terrain. It is possible to use mountain bikes for city cycling although this is not what they are best suited for.

Never leave out the safety gear, either. Bicycle helmets have come a long way since they were first introduced. They are now designed to offer better protection while looking a bit better, as well. You should never even think about riding the bike without first putting on your helmet. You never know when that little detail is going to save you from an early grave.

It wouldn't hurt to invest in some knee pads and elbow pads, as well as wrist and ankle guards if you plan to do some off-roading. Another good idea is to buy some pants clips if you are going to be riding your bike as your primary form of transportation. They work by clipping your pants out of the way so they can't get tangled in the chain or gears. You need to consider several things when choosing your bicycle for the first time. Will this be an activity that you enjoy daily, or will you only be taking your bicycle out on special occasions? At what height do you feel the most comfortable?
